Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 series on September 8, but supply constraints and production issues could delay its arrival in markets outside the US.
iPhone Fold May Face Delayed Global Rollout Amid Supply Concerns
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is drawing closer to its expected debut, but consumers in several markets may have to wait beyond the launch date to buy the device.
The company is reportedly preparing to unveil the highly anticipated iPhone Fold alongside the iPhone 18 lineup on September 8, 2026. However, supply constraints, production testing problems and concerns over pricing could lead Apple to adopt a limited initial rollout, according to reports.
The potential delay would mean that while the device could be introduced in September, availability across international markets may not begin at the same time.
Supply and Pricing Challenges
A major supplier based in China has reportedly indicated that Apple is facing several challenges ahead of the foldable iPhone’s launch.
According to a report by Australian technology news outlet Channel News, the supplier said the difficulties are primarily related to supply and pricing. The source, which was not identified, also pointed to problems involving testing of the device.
Apple is reportedly dealing with issues involving production models that have already been manufactured. Production verification tests are said to have identified problems with both the hinge mechanism and the foldable display.
Those issues could complicate Apple’s preparations for mass production at a time when the company is expected to be working toward a major new product launch.
The mass-production schedule has already reportedly undergone changes. Production was initially planned to begin in June 2026, before being pushed back to early August. According to the report, that timetable has now shifted again.
The changes have raised questions over how many units Apple will have ready when the iPhone Fold is officially unveiled.
September 8 Launch Still Expected
Despite the reported production challenges, Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone Fold at its September 8 event, where the company is also expected to unveil its new iPhone 18 lineup.
The foldable’s availability, however, may not match the timing of the announcement.
Concerns about a staggered rollout have surfaced in several reports in the run-up to the expected launch. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reportedly said the premium foldable is unlikely to be immediately available in every market because of limited supply.
Kuo has also suggested that Apple’s approach could resemble the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. Apple unveiled the iPhone X in September that year, but the device did not reach stores immediately after its introduction.
A similar strategy for the iPhone Fold would allow Apple to announce the product in September while initially concentrating available units in selected markets.
Gurman Points to Later Availability
Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has also indicated that the foldable iPhone may arrive later than Apple’s other premium models.
During a recent live question-and-answer session, Gurman said there was “no doubt” that the iPhone Fold would be released after the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max ship in September.
That would place the foldable on a different availability schedule from the company’s conventional flagship models.
For consumers waiting for Apple’s first entry into the foldable smartphone market, the distinction could be significant. The September event may provide the first official look at the device, while actual retail availability could follow at a later date depending on production volumes.
US Could Get Priority
Reports suggest Apple may initially focus its limited supply on the US market.
The company is expected to manufacture around seven million iPhone Fold units during the second half of 2026. Most of those devices are reportedly expected to be sold first in the US, with China among the other key markets to follow.
A US-first strategy could leave customers in other countries facing a longer wait.
Australia, for example, is reportedly among the markets where consumers may not see the iPhone Fold on retail shelves immediately after its launch. The timing of availability in India remains unclear, and it is not known whether the country would be included in the initial rollout or face the same delays expected in some other regions.
With production expected to remain limited during the early stages, supplies outside the US could be particularly tight.
According to the report, the restricted availability could push back the arrival of the foldable in some international markets by as much as two to three months.
Apple Enters a Growing Foldable Market
Apple’s arrival comes as foldable smartphones continue to develop beyond their earlier niche status.
Samsung, one of Apple’s biggest competitors, unveiled a new foldable range last month, including the Samsung Galaxy Fold 8. The device features a form factor designed to resemble an international passport when closed.
Apple’s entry into the category is expected to attract significant attention not only because of the company’s influence in the smartphone market, but also because analysts believe it could help broaden consumer interest in foldable devices.
Rather than simply competing with Samsung and other established foldable-phone makers, Apple’s entry could potentially expand awareness of the category and help move folding smartphones closer to the mainstream.
That could benefit the wider foldable segment by encouraging more consumers to consider the form factor.
Price Could Be Another Hurdle
Whether consumers will be prepared to pay for Apple’s first foldable remains another major question.
Apple has yet to disclose official pricing for the iPhone Fold. That figure is expected to be revealed only at the September 8 launch event, alongside details of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra.
However, rumours have pointed to a price substantially above that of existing iPhone models.
The potential cost comes as the global smartphone industry faces pressure from increasing component expenses. Rising demand for memory chips, partly driven by the intensifying artificial intelligence race, has contributed to higher costs, while broader geopolitical uncertainties are also affecting the market.
Those factors could add to the pricing challenge surrounding a product that is already expected to occupy the premium end of Apple’s lineup.
Global Availability Remains Uncertain
For now, the exact rollout strategy for the iPhone Fold remains unclear.
Apple’s expected September 8 unveiling could confirm the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market, but reported production and testing difficulties mean the announcement may not translate into simultaneous retail availability worldwide.
The US is expected to receive priority if initial production remains limited, followed by other major markets such as China. Other regions could have to wait, potentially for two to three months.
Whether India will be among the first markets or part of the later rollout remains uncertain.
Much will depend on Apple’s final production volumes, the resolution of reported hinge and display testing issues, and the company’s approach to distributing the limited initial supply.
For consumers watching the September launch, therefore, the key development may not simply be the unveiling of the iPhone Fold, but when and where Apple ultimately makes its first foldable iPhone available.
