Congress MLA Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy has reignited political debate with sharp remarks on Telangana governance, Andhra influence and the party leadership. His comments have raised questions over whether the Congress high command will respond.
Komatireddy’s ‘Andhra’ Remark Sparks Fresh Congress Tension
Fresh political tensions are emerging in Telangana after senior Congress MLA and Munugode legislator Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy openly criticised the state government and raised questions over the alleged influence of Andhra leaders in Telangana politics.
Opposition BRS leaders have repeatedly accused the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government of functioning under the influence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Such allegations are generally seen as part of opposition politics. But the latest controversy has taken a different turn because similar criticism has now come from within the ruling Congress itself.
Raj Gopal Reddy’s remarks have triggered discussion in political circles and reportedly caused unease among sections of the Congress organisation.
Remarks at Ravindra Bharati
The controversy erupted after Raj Gopal Reddy attended a book launch event at Ravindra Bharati in Hyderabad on Thursday. The event was organised to mark prominent artist Aepuri Somanna’s 25-year musical journey, with Raj Gopal Reddy attending as the chief guest.
Speaking at the event, the Munugode MLA expressed dissatisfaction with the way political positions are being filled in Telangana. He alleged that people who had no connection with the Telangana movement and had not worked at the grassroots level for the Congress were now occupying important positions.
He also made a direct reference to the alleged influence of Andhra leaders, claiming that Telangana’s rulers and political leaders were still functioning under the influence of leaders from Andhra.
The comments have attracted particular attention because they came from a sitting MLA belonging to the ruling party rather than from an opposition leader.
Questions Over Telangana’s Progress
Raj Gopal Reddy also expressed concern that the aspirations of those who sacrificed their lives during the Telangana movement had not been fully realised even years after the formation of the state.
He said justice had not been delivered to the poor and criticised the government’s approach to development and public spending.
According to Raj Gopal Reddy, governments have borrowed lakhs of crores of rupees in the name of development while allegedly continuing to benefit the same contractors. His remarks indirectly questioned the government’s financial decisions and the manner in which contracts were being awarded.
He also stressed that Telangana did not belong to any individual or family, describing the state as the result of a six-decade-long struggle.
Reference to His Munugode Battle
Raj Gopal Reddy also recalled his earlier political battles against the then ruling BRS and the KCR family.
He said that after fighting against what he described as family rule under KCR, he won the 2018 election and later resigned as MLA. He recalled that the then ruling BRS had sent around 100 MLAs to Munugode in an effort to defeat him.
His remarks also touched on the Indiramma housing scheme. He alleged that the government had imposed around 500 different conditions for constructing a house costing Rs 5 lakh, criticising what he described as excessive restrictions affecting beneficiaries.
‘People Are Behind Me’
Raj Gopal Reddy further asserted that he did not need to depend on MLAs facing corruption allegations or those who had failed to retain their deposits in elections.
He said the people were his real support base.
The MLA also indicated that his position within the Congress had made him cautious about speaking openly on several issues. However, he warned that once he started speaking freely, he would not back down.
Looking ahead, Raj Gopal Reddy said Telangana would witness a political transformation similar to the one seen in Tamil Nadu. He also said efforts would be made to ensure that honest people and activists from the Telangana movement enter the legislative assemblies.
Not His First Criticism
Raj Gopal Reddy’s latest remarks are not the first time he has publicly criticised the government or indirectly questioned the Chief Minister’s approach.
On earlier occasions too, he has made critical statements about the government. However, the Congress high command has largely refrained from taking strong action against him, according to the political discussion surrounding his earlier remarks.
A section within the party had reportedly raised concerns over his approach, but the high command did not respond strongly. This has led to speculation that the MLA has become increasingly outspoken because previous comments did not result in any significant disciplinary action.
His political journey, particularly since the Munugode by-election, has also been marked by an independent approach and occasional differences with the party establishment.
Pressure on the Congress High Command
The latest controversy puts the Congress leadership in a difficult position. While the BRS has been using allegations of Andhra influence as a political weapon against the Congress government, Raj Gopal Reddy has now raised a similar issue from within the ruling party.
His criticism covers not only the alleged influence of Andhra leaders but also governance, development spending, political appointments and the implementation of welfare schemes.
That makes the issue more sensitive for the Congress leadership, particularly because the comments were made publicly and came from a senior legislator of the ruling party.
The key question now is whether the Congress high command will seek an explanation from Raj Gopal Reddy or initiate disciplinary action over his remarks.
Alternatively, the leadership could once again choose to avoid a direct confrontation and allow the controversy to subside.
For now, Raj Gopal Reddy’s comments have added another layer to the political debate in Telangana. Whether they remain a one-off expression of dissent or develop into a larger issue within the Congress will become clearer in the coming days.
