A Festive Evening Turns Tragic in South Mumbai
What was intended to be a vibrant celebration marking the onset of Ganesh Chaturthi turned into a devastating tragedy late Saturday night in South Mumbai. During a high-spirited Ganesh Aagaman—a procession welcoming the arrival of the Lord Ganesha idol to its designated pandal—a massive 22-foot statue lost stability and collapsed onto the surrounding crowd.
The catastrophic incident, which occurred in the historic neighborhood of Bhuleshwar, resulted in the immediate deaths of two devotees and left five others severely injured. The unexpected disaster has cast a heavy pall of grief over local residents and festival organizers just as citywide celebrations were getting underway.
Jerk on Balaram Merchant Road Triggers Collapse
According to statements released by local police officials, elaborate arrangements had been made to transport the majestic 22-foot idol to its pandal in Bhuleshwar. Devotees had gathered in large numbers on Saturday evening to accompany the procession, singing devotional songs and celebrating along the route.
At approximately 10:00 PM, as the heavy transport vehicle navigated along Balaram Merchant Road, it encountered a severe and sudden jerk. The violent movement caused the towering structure to lose its balance on the flatbed. Before handlers or bystanders could react, the multi-ton idol tilted sideways and crashed directly onto the dense crowd walking alongside the vehicle.
Casualties Identified as Community Mourns Loss
The overwhelming weight of the falling structure left those beneath it with no time to escape. Emergency responders confirmed that two men were crushed under the sheer impact of the idol and died at the scene. Authorities subsequently identified the deceased as 33-year-old Sanket Nevshe and 30-year-old Brijesh Hemant Joshi.
Five additional participants in the procession sustained severe injuries during the collapse. Local residents and duty police personnel moved quickly to clear the debris and extract the trapped victims. The injured were rushed via emergency services to a nearby hospital, where medical teams continue to provide urgent medical treatment.
Safety Concerns Surface Ahead of Main Festivities
The sudden loss of two young lives at the very beginning of the festival season has sent shockwaves through the local community in Bhuleshwar and across Mumbai. Neighborhoods that had spent weeks preparing for colorful cultural gatherings now find themselves in deep mourning.
The fatal incident has also reignited safety concerns regarding the transport and handling of massive festive structures through narrow city streets. As authorities investigate the exact physical cause of the vehicle's sudden movement, local leaders and residents are assessing safety protocols for remaining processions throughout the city.
