Bhogapuram International Airport has commenced commercial operations, with the first domestic flight arriving from Hyderabad on Monday morning. The airport will connect several Indian cities and offer international services to Singapore and Abu Dhabi.
Bhogapuram Airport Opens for Commercial Flights
Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh has officially begun flight operations, marking the start of a new phase in air connectivity for the region.
The first domestic flight to arrive at the newly built airport was an IndiGo service from Hyderabad, which touched down at 6:45 a.m. on Monday.
The airport has been developed by GMR, and domestic air services became operational from Monday. The launch of regular operations follows the departure of a Scoot Airlines flight to Singapore shortly after midnight on Sunday, which marked the beginning of services at the airport.
The arrival of the first domestic flight was accompanied by a welcome ceremony for passengers and airline operations at the new facility.
First Domestic Arrival Comes From Hyderabad
The IndiGo flight from Hyderabad reached Bhogapuram at 6:45 a.m. Monday, becoming the first domestic service to arrive at the airport after operations began.
Airport officials and representatives of GMR were present to welcome the passengers as they arrived.
As part of the welcome, passengers were presented with Etikoppaka toys as souvenirs. The traditional handicrafts were given to travellers as a memento of their arrival at the new airport.
Following the first arrival, flights began departing from Bhogapuram for destinations including Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi, signalling the start of the airport’s domestic network.
The launch has brought commercial aviation operations to the new facility while services at the existing Visakhapatnam airport have been discontinued.
Connections to Major Indian Cities
Bhogapuram Airport is scheduled to provide air links to several major cities across India.
Domestic services from the airport will connect passengers with Hyderabad, Tirupati, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai.
The new airport will also have international connectivity. Air India and Scoot Airlines will provide services to Singapore, while IndiGo will operate flights to Abu Dhabi.
The combination of domestic and international routes will make Bhogapuram a new point of departure and arrival for passengers travelling to destinations within India and abroad.
On Monday alone, a total of 31 flight services are scheduled to operate through the airport, covering arrivals and departures.
Electric Buses Link Visakhapatnam With Bhogapuram
Arrangements have also been made to facilitate passenger movement between Visakhapatnam and the new airport.
A fleet of 20 electric buses has been deployed for passenger transportation between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram Airport.
The bus service is intended to provide a travel connection for passengers moving between the city and the newly operational airport.
With commercial aviation shifting to Bhogapuram, these ground transport arrangements form an important part of the transition from the old airport to the new facility.
Visakhapatnam Airport Ends Commercial Operations
The launch of Bhogapuram Airport has brought commercial flight operations at Visakhapatnam Airport to an end.
The last flight from Visakhapatnam departed for Delhi at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, bringing the airport’s commercial operations to a close before services moved to Bhogapuram.
The transition marks a significant change in the region’s aviation operations, with Bhogapuram now taking over as the location for the scheduled commercial services previously handled by Visakhapatnam Airport.
However, questions remain over the future deployment of the personnel who were working at Visakhapatnam Airport.
Approximately 1,000 employees have been working at the Visakhapatnam airport, and there is currently no clarity on where these employees will be assigned in the future.
New Airport Begins With Domestic and International Links
The opening of Bhogapuram International Airport brings both domestic and international services under one new facility.
The first operational sequence began with the Scoot Airlines service to Singapore late on Sunday night. The following morning, the arrival of the IndiGo flight from Hyderabad marked the beginning of domestic passenger services.
Airport officials and GMR representatives welcomed passengers on the first domestic arrival and presented them with Etikoppaka toys.
The airport’s initial schedule includes flights connecting several prominent Indian cities, while international services will link the facility with Singapore and Abu Dhabi.
A total of 31 services are scheduled to operate on Monday, providing an immediate network of arrivals and departures as the airport begins its commercial journey.
A New Base for Regional Air Travel
The shift from Visakhapatnam Airport to Bhogapuram represents a change in the region’s aviation infrastructure.
Passengers travelling to and from Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas will now use Bhogapuram for scheduled commercial flights. The availability of electric buses between Visakhapatnam and the airport is intended to support this transition.
The new facility’s opening also establishes direct links with a range of destinations, from Hyderabad and Bengaluru to Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Tirupati. International connectivity through Singapore and Abu Dhabi is also part of the initial service network.
For passengers, the first domestic arrival from Hyderabad on Monday morning provided the clearest sign that Bhogapuram Airport had moved from construction and preparation into active commercial operations.
The beginning of services follows the final commercial departure from Visakhapatnam Airport on Sunday night, completing the shift of scheduled passenger aviation operations to Bhogapuram.
The immediate focus now turns to the airport’s scheduled network, with 31 services planned on its first Monday of operations and connectivity to multiple domestic and international destinations already included in the opening schedule.
