Anti-Corruption Bureau officers in Telangana arrested a Panchayat Secretary in Mancherial district after catching her red-handed accepting an Rs 11,000 bribe for house construction permission.
An ongoing state-wide crackdown on corrupt public officials by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Telangana yielded another major arrest on Friday. Officers from the anti-graft agency trapped and apprehended a local administrative official red-handed in Mancherial district while she was allegedly accepting an illegal gratification payment.
The latest operation highlights an intensified enforcement drive across the state aimed at curbing bribery within public administration offices, particularly those handling civil permissions, local governance, and land-related documentation.
Red-Handed Trap in Jannaram Mandal
The operation took place in the Jannaram Mandal of Mancherial district. According to officials, the accused, identified as Varalakshmi, was serving as the Panchayat Secretary for the Lingayyapalle Gram Panchayat.
The matter came to light after a local resident approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau with a formal complaint detailing demands for illegal payment. According to the complainant, Varalakshmi had demanded a bribe of Rs 11,000 in exchange for issuing official administrative approval required for constructing a house within the village jurisdiction.
Unwilling to yield to the extortionate demand, the citizen reported the official to the anti-graft watchdog. Acting promptly on the verified complaint, ACB officers formulated a strategic operation to catch the suspect in the act.
Cash Seized and Legal Proceedings Initiated
On Friday, ACB investigators laid a trap as the complainant met with the Panchayat Secretary to hand over the demanded amount. Bureau personnel monitored the transaction and swooped in immediately after the cash exchanged hands.
Varalakshmi was caught in the act of accepting the bribe sum of Rs 11,000. Investigators recovered the tainted money directly from her possession during the scene-of-crime procedures.
Following the initial apprehension, ACB personnel formally seized the bribe money as evidence, secured the site, and completed preliminary questioning. A formal criminal case has been registered against the Panchayat Secretary under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials subsequently processed her custody and arranged for her production before a designated ACB judicial court for further legal proceedings.
